The 39th Annual Bernina Northland Fashion Awards, organized by the Rotary Club of Whangarei South, took place on Friday, 12th August 2016.

The show was hosted by Toast from More FM and was heralded a great success with some very talented young designers coming through.

There were 8 categories this year with first time categories Steampunk and Retro-Redesigned together with the Wearable Art categories, Trash to Fashion, and Fashion Design categories. Every year more and more businesses are getting behind this event, they see the potential of an event like this in Northland.

Some of the garments were created using everyday items we see such as bread ties, plastic meat trays, oil paintings, toilet rolls, flax, shells, old rugby balls being just a few of the things.

The show this year boasted its oldest and youngest models being one designers grandmother in her early 80’s and another designers 3 year old daughter.

This years ‘Designer of the Year’ was Fran Spick with her garment titled ‘On The Rise’ modeled by Tenae Ford-Mason. The garment was made from plastic bread ties.

The major sponsors this year were Bernina Northland, Steve Haywood Master Jeweller, Henderson Reeves, Mediaworks, Venues & Events, Northland Document Solutions Ltd (Ricoh), Arthurs Emporium, Perpetual Guardian, People Potential, Sarah Marshall Photography, Channel North, Snow Bros. and Z Northland.
