Fabulous spring

BY KAREN MATICH, POLWARTH DESIGN

How absolutely fabulous!!! SPRING is in the air in the fashion world!!

Just like a good old West Coast beach, the fashion landscape has transformed once again. The lonely remnants of winter demoted to one crammed rack and rammed into a dark corner, to accommodate our new arrivals. And arrive they have, by the truckload, inundating our stores with radiating colours, fabrics and styles despite the temperature outside.

So how do we make fashion sense out of this sudden overload, when we’ve just got used to the ‘ankle boot, oversized, white shirt’ look for winter? What is the ‘go’ for spring??

Emerging new trends from the gurus of the international fashion world seem to be very in tune. Stripes are a huge statement this year, appearing in standout jackets, tops or tanks, at all angles, defying fashion rules. Complementing stripes is the resurgence of gingham, in the form of flowing calf length dresses with irregular hemlines, skinny pants or natty full skirts. Designer are having fun with micro-pleats and ruffles, creating draped cascading structures unstructured dresses and skirts which flatter any silhouette.

Having its moment this spring is the ‘cold shoulder’ look – cut-outs in tops or dresses for bare shoulders to peek through, creating an interesting, dare I say, sexy, appeal. Continuing on the sexy line is the skimpy ‘lingerie by day’ look sporting a slinky cami with shoe-string straps. Pyjama dressing puts a damper on ‘sexy’ with its unstructured, loose, tie back, silky appeal, definitely an incentive to ditch the ‘onesie’. And of course denim, never out of the denim, in straight legged trousers, cropped jackets, chambray shirts – everything that’s natural.

So basically this SPRING you’ll hit the spot when you flick on that ‘cold shoulder’ top with ruffled sleeves, team it with a micro- pleated gingham skirt over patterned wide leg jeans, rounded off with a boldly striped pyjama style jacket flashing a bit of bling on the lapel. Oh and don’t forget your rucksack. How Absolutely Fabulous!! But probably a little over the top all at once – don’t you think Eddie??
